Northend Greenway

Good for you, Good for the 'Burg!

Suzi’s Giving it Back

As we approach the final days of 2012, I wanted to share two things I love: “best of” lists and giving back. First, I compiled (ever enthusiastically) a Best of the Greenway 2012 to highlight what an amazing year it’s been. You can check it out here. Second, the close of a year gives me the opportunity to reflect on the bigger picture and how much this community project means to so many people, including me.

The City’s $600,000 allocation to the Greenway was one of our biggest accomplishments of our two-year history. And not only because it enables the building of the path, and is the City’s largest investment in bike and walking infrastructure to date. Even more, it’s significant because we’ve helped our City to prioritize and reflect one of the things we as a community care about: a more bikeable, walkable and sustainable Friendly City for everyone.

Unfortunately, while we worked tirelessly for this success, we won’t see a dime of this funding. Local and state funds will only go to the City to pay for engineering and implementation of the physical path – it cannot go to continue our successful outreach, planning, marketing, staffing, programming, fundraising, grant writing, etc. So, on the cusp of receiving over $1 million to implement Phase I of the Greenway, we ironically find ourselves in one of the tightest financial spots we’ve experienced. Because we fronted the funds necessary for preliminary design and engineering to get the Greenway going – before the City stepped forward – we are currently behind about $8,000.

So, here’s what I’m going to do: I’m making a $250 donation to the Northend Greenway. Why? Because the Northend Greenway is more than just a job to me. I believe the Greenway is a critical initiative for Harrisonburg and beyond, and if the Northend Greenway is going to continue to flourish beyond Phase I, it needs our financial support.

Will you join me and make a year-end gift? If you can stretch a little for us, I promise we’ll stretch every dollar you donate as far as possible to support a fully connected network of safe, low-stress places to bike and walk for the whole community.

Or if you’d like to mail a check, please make it out to “Northend Greenway” and send to:

Thanks for considering and thank you for being a part of the Northend Greenway in 2012. I look forward to an even more connected 2013 and beyond!
